Color Self Portrait

I took a picture of each student and then edited them in Photoshop using the cutout filter. I specified 5 layers in my cutout filter. Students created self portraits using the grid method. Students then created a value scale with tempra paint to practice mixing tints and shades. They then painted their self portrait with tints and shades and a complementary color for the background.

Here is the edited photo, printed in black and white with a half inch grid drawn over it.
Here is the drawing with an inch grid over it; it is twice as large as the edited photo above.
Here is the "final" product... except this one isn't finished! (This was my example by the way!)
 Here are the students' projects!

Still Life Drawings

The students chose a still life to observe in the classroom out of the four set up. They each did three practice sketches in their sketchbooks to come up with most successful composition. The students then created a large scale drawing of their best sketch using charcoal and focusing on value and shading and blending.

Value Forms

Students learned about value and how to shade and blend with graphite. They then created graphite drawings utilizing these techniques. Some drawings are accompanied by their practice drawings. Do you see an improvement?
